We teach a systematic manual trigger point therapy approach which has been developed originaly by Beat Dejung, MD and a group of Physiotherapists from Switzerland in the early eighties. The approach consists of trigger point techniques and release techniques. The trigger point techniques focus on the trigger point itself and the taut band. The release techniques target the fascia and the entire muscle. The techniques are numbered technique I - IV.
Trigger point techniques and intermuscular mobilisation are applied with strong manual pressure. Although manual trigger point therapy therefore can be painful, the pain should be described by the patient as a "good pain". The more precise the pressure on the trigger point is applied the less pressure is needed. Before using manual trigger point therapy, patients have to be informed about possible side effects, and contraindications have to be considered. Trigger point compression can be applied with simultaneous contraction of the respective muscle. Fascial release techniques should not be painful.
